How to Prepare for an EMG or NCS Appointment

How to Prepare for an EMG or NCS Appointment

Introduction
If your doctor has ordered an EMG (electromyography) or NCS (nerve conduction study), you may be wondering how to prepare. The good news: there’s very little you need to do. Still, a few simple steps can help your appointment go smoothly and ensure the most accurate results.

1. Wear the Right Clothing

  • Choose loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your arms and legs.
  • Shorts and short-sleeved shirts work best.

2. Avoid Lotions or Oils

  • On the day of your test, don’t apply lotion, cream, or oil to your skin.
  • These products can interfere with the sensors and electrodes.

3. Continue Taking Your Medications

  • Unless your doctor gives different instructions, take your medications as prescribed.
  • Pain medication can be taken before the test if needed—it does not interfere with results.

4. Share Your Medical History

  • Tell your physician if you have a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, or history of mastectomy.
  • This won’t prevent testing but may change how the test is performed.

5. Relax and Breathe

  • EMG/NCS tests are safe, quick, and generally well tolerated.
  • Staying relaxed helps reduce muscle tension, which can make the test more comfortable.

A little preparation goes a long way in making your EMG/NCS appointment easier. By following these steps, you’ll help your physician get the clearest results possible.
